FIELD GUIDE: Activities in Thredbo Village

The ski resort of Thredbo Village came of age during the late Fifties and Sixties. a mid-century ode to Austrian Ski villages. Bright A-Frames in primary colours, circular futuristic structures and a timber cantilevered Harry Seidler still stand today.

High up in The hills of Mt Kosciuszko, the winding streets of Thredbo Village are a playground for outdoor activity. Skiing, cycling and hiking.

It’s where tHE OUTDOORS AREN’T JUST A PASSION, BUT A WAY OF LIFE.

Back Country Skiing

Want the powder all to yourself? Thredbo have teamed up with The North Face to offer back country tours.

The tours range from a few hours to all day, with difficulty ratings that cater to beginner, intermediate, and advanced skiers. Making the transition off piste easier than ever.

While anyone with a sense of direction and a Thredbo lift pass can explore the ungroomed terrain surrounding Mt Kosciuszko, a guided trip is a great way to familiarise yourself with the mountains and learn how to use skins in a low-risk environment. Book through the Thredbo website.

OFF ROADING

One of my favourite drives is to Charlotte Pass and then through to Guthega. The road is unsealed in parts, so be sure you bring the defender.

In Spring you can expect to see an impressive glacier on Spencers Creek and lookouts to gaze over Mt Kosciuszko.

natural pools and waterholes

While the Cedar Cabin is located in front of one of the more popular natural swimming pools of the Thredbo River, there are many more secluded ones to enjoy.

Some of our favourites are (minute walk) south on the Dead Horse Gap walking track. Behind Rockpool Lodge in Woodridge and

Back Country Huts

Scattered throughout the high country, the Kosciuszko Huts were built by stockmen, prospectors, recreational fishermen, skiers and the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority to meet their accommodation, shelter, recreational and hydrology needs at the time.

The huts are important markers of past use and construction techniques. They're now also visitor destinations and used as emergency shelters. These strikingly beautiful pieces of history are dotted throughout the mountains and plains of Kosciuszko National Park.

are now cared for co-operatively by Kosciuszko Huts Association (KHA) and the NPWS.
